Heart of Outdoor Living – Outdoor Kitchens
written by Jennifer Michalik, Outdoor Living Product Manager
In my house, everyone gathers in the kitchen. It doesn’t matter how many people are over, it is where we always end up hanging out. I’d venture to say my household is not the only one where that happens. This predictable gathering phenomenon helped create one of this year’s hottest trends in outdoor living. I’m talking about the outdoor kitchen, the indisputable core of every successful outdoor living space.
Outdoor kitchens are now both an integral and permanent part of the landscape, so they need to be as functional as they are beautiful. As we discussed last month, Eldorado Building Blocks can easily create the perfect foundation of the outdoor kitchen, but where do you go from there? The first step is in order to determine what you need, you have to decide what you want.
Simply start with the grill. It’s the largest component and makes the biggest statement, therefore becoming a priority. Hydro-Scape offers grills and accessories made in the USA by RH Peterson. Fire Magic has built-in stainless steel grills ranging from 24” wide up to 48” and a variety of options, including infrared burners, interior halogen lights, windows, different ignition systems and even a gas/charcoal combination grill. American Outdoor Grill (AOG) also offers stainless steel grills ranging from 24” wide up to 36” with a variety of options.
The next logical step in the design process is determining the doors that go underneath the grill. Doors not only allow access underneath the grill, but there can be some very cool and functional components hidden behind those doors.
You should then decide what your ‘must haves’ are that will make your outdoor kitchen your own. Those items can be anything from a side burner, sink, refrigerator, more doors or drawers to a built-in beverage center, bar caddy or outdoor-rated kegerator! The key is to think about how you’ll use your outdoor kitchen, and then make sure you’ve included the accessories you’ll need to make that vision become a reality.
Yet again, I could easily talk for an hour or two about outdoor kitchen design and construction.
