How to Install EZ-FLO Fertilizer
written by Kevin Treft, Sales Representative
WHAT IS EZ-FLO?
EZ-FLO offers delivery systems for any size landscape that proportions any liquid or water soluble non-hazardous product through your irrigation system to your turf, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. Now your sprinklers, sub-surface and drip emitters carry not only water but small amounts of fertilizer as well. A system with concentrated fertilizer is connected to your irrigation valves and slowly proportions fertilizer into the irrigation at feed rates as low as 1/20th of a teaspoon per gallon of water out on the slow feed setting. And the systems adjust automatically to pressure and flow changes with no moving parts.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Water is diverted from your irrigation main line into the EZ-FLO system through the black tubing connecting the system to the CBV (Coupling Ball Valve) Connection. The mixed solution (fertilizer and water) is proportioned out of the system via a clear tubing, back into your irrigation system. The two tubes are color coded for easy recognition. Black tubing on the “Blue Water In” side and clear tubing on the “Green Fertilizer Out”. The CBV connections also have blue and green sides and the tubing is held on with provided tubing clamps.
WHAT KIND OF FERTILIZERS CAN BE USED?
EZ-FLO has many different fertilizers, supplements, water treatment, pest control products that can be purchased, however any water soluble fertilizer or liquid non-hazardous product heavier than water will work in their system.
IS IT EASY TO MAINTAIN?
EZ-FLO has products you can add to keep your drip emitters and sprinklers clean and unclogged. When the Systems are empty they are full of water. With no moving parts there is nothing to wear out.
We are going to guide you through a typical EZ-FLO installation for a 6-8 controller irrigation system. For this system, we will use the EZKIT-1 (100 – 12,000 sq. ft. coverage), which includes:
- PVC Tank & patented CAP (hold fertilizer + water)
- 1” Ball Valve/Coupling
- ¾” Reducer Fitting
- Slip Fix (attaches to ball valve connection)
- (2) 5 ft. ¼” tubing (attaches to tank)
STEP ONE: TURN OFF IRRIGATION SYSTEM
Make sure your irrigation is turned off before installing an EZ-FLO system. Open an irrigation valve to release pressure in the line.
STEP TWO: CUT & REMOVE IRRIGATION PIPE
To make room for adding the CBV connection and slip fix, you’ll need to cut and remove some irrigation pipe between the back flow and first set of irrigation valves
STEP THREE: MAY NEED TO INSTALL PRESSURE VACUUM BREAKER
In order to prevent the fertilizer from back flowing into your drinking water, you may need to install a Pressure Vacuum Breaker between the anti-siphon valves if one is not present.
STEP FOUR: TURN WATER BACK ON
Once all the tubes have been connected, slowly turn the water back on and leave the Black and Clear Tubing disconnected from the System with both grey Shut Off Valves in the OFF POSITION.
STEP FIVE: ADD FERTILIZER
Using a funnel, pour in up to 12 lbs. of water soluble fertilizer and top off with water until the tank is completely full and void of air or 1.5 gallons of liquid fertilizer and or product into the tank.
STEP SIX: PURGING THE AIR and PRIMING THE SYSTEM
There can be NO AIR in the tank before everything is hooked up and the system is turned on. Screw the cap back onto the tank and attach only the black hose to the blue “Water In” side of the cap. Open that ball valve and let the water go into the tank. On the clear tube side wait until the colored fertilizer starts coming out the tube and there are no air bubbles. Then close the ball valve on the black tube, and slip on the washer and reattach the clear tube to the cap. Open the grey “Shut Off Valves” on both sides of the cap and watch for the fertilizer to start metering through the clear tube.
If the fertilizer is stopping part way in the clear tube, all you have to do is close the (CBV) ball valve slightly and this creates additional pressure differential in the system and it will now draw the fertilizer into the irrigation system. Leave the ball valve handle in that same position and you are good to go.
The system will automatically adjust to pressure and flow changes for you proportioning the same ppm on a rotor zone per gallon of water as a drip zone or sub surface. Micro-feeding with each watering.
STEP SEVEN: CHOOSE ONE OF THE 4 SETTINGS
There are 4 dial settings from which you’ll need to choose. Follow your EZ-FLO instructions to set one that best fits your watering schedule and desired results.
STEP EIGHT: HOW TO TURN OFF
If you want to turn off the EZ-FLO system to only have water flowing, simply close the “Shut Off Valves” on the black and clear tubing and this will bypass the system.
It usually takes about 7-8 weeks for the tank to deplete its fertilizer.
Some benefits of using this system include:
- Less labor (no need to send a crew to spread dry granular fertilizer) Irrigation system applies it for you. One man can feed a six acre project in 30 minutes filling an EZ-FLO System.
- No chance of chemical burn (accurate fertilizer metering spoon fed eliminates this risk)
- Water savings of 20-30% (no more overwatering to dissolve granular fertilizers)
- Nutrition with every watering and healthy root systems increases water efficiency. Studies prove this.
- Fertilizer usages decrease by 40-90% (results in annual bottom line savings)
- 90% absorption with EZ-FLO verses 10 -20% with granular fertilizers. Less equals more with EZ-FLO.
