Paving the Way for Outdoor Living
written by Jennifer Michalik, Outdoor Living Product Manager
These days, pavers have transformed into being an integral part of many outdoor living spaces. It’s not only because they serve as a foundation on which to build, sit or walk on, but they have become a much more important part of the design process and a positive impact to the finished landscape. Today’s pavers are now as beautiful as they are functional. With the innovations in color, shape, size, pattern and application, there is rarely a landscape design challenge that today’s pavers can’t handle.
Concrete pavers are the most widely used type of paver. They are available in rectangular or square shapes, generally ranging from a small 4” x 4” paver to a large 15” x 23” size! (I say “generally”, because there is a newer concrete paver on the market that is actually shaped like flagstone. It comes with false grout joints formed into the paver for additional realism.)
Colors vary from warm earth tones to cool grays and are typically sold in color blends. Color blended pavers are designed in a variance of colors in order to give them a more natural appearance. Pavers now have different textures ranging from a smooth, flat surface to a rustic surface creating more variation. If those aren’t enough options for you, pavers have different edges ranging from a crisp, straight edge, to a rounded, cobble-type edge, to a more irregular, tumbled edge. The sky is the limit (which is ironic since pavers lie on the ground).
The newest introduction to the hardscape market are porcelain pavers – and they are beautiful! As an alternative to natural stone, they can be price competitive, virtually maintenance free and simply stunning. Porcelain pavers are designed for outdoors, so they are thicker than standard tiles, have textures that make them slip resistant and are actually stronger than concrete pavers. With colors that run throughout the porcelain paver, they can be cut and fabricated with ease, and can resemble natural stone, quartzite and even wood. See below the Belgard® porcelain pavers:
