Water Supply Troubleshooting Chart

The house water supply is bacteria-contaminated.

Possible Causes: Remedy:
There is no backflow prevention installed on the system. Install the mandated backflow prevention device required by local codes.

 

There is water runoff after a zone finishes watering.

Possible Causes: Remedy:
The irrigation system is over watering. Reduce the run times for the affected zones.
The system is watering a slope. Irrigate slopes for shorter periods but more often, or reduce the sprinkler precipitation rate for that zone.

 

There are water puddles in the yard.

Possible Causes: Remedy:
There is a leak in the irrigation system. Find and repair the leak or replace the broken part that’s causing the leak.
There is a puncture in one of the drip irrigation lines Find and plug the hole.
The irrigation system in on too long. Reduce the minutes of run time for your zones.

 

There is no water in one part of one zone.

Possible Causes: Remedy:
The poly-tubing supply line may be kinked. Find the kinks and straighten them. Install drip stakes to keep the line free of kinks.
There is rock or other debris deforming the supply pipe. Inspect the pipe. Remove any rocks or debris and bed the pipe in sand.
A buildup of debris and sediment has blocked line. Thoroughly flush out the zone lines.

 

The system is damaged by winter freezing.

Possible Causes: Remedy:
The system was not properly winterized.
  1. Install drain valves at each zone’s lowest point.
  2. Blow out the system with compressed air before each winter.
